SRI LANKA - INTRODUCTION
HISTORY (CLICK HERE) The Sinhalese arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 543 B.C., probably from northern India. The leader of that group, Wijaya was the first king of the country. His capital was Thammanna. Pandukabhaya ( 437 B.C. ) was the first king who selected Anuradhapura as the capital. Buddhism was introduced by Rev. Mahinda thero from India beginning in about the mid-third century B.C. when Devanampiyatissa was the king of the country, and a great civilization developed at the cities of Anuradhapura (kingdom from 437 B.C. to 741 A.D.) and Polonnaruwa (from about 846 A.D. to 991 A.D.). There was a great revolution in cultural, social, economical and agricultural aspects under several kings due to Buddhism. Sri Lanka occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and by the Dutch in the 17th century, the island was ceded to the British in 1796 ( at the time duration of last king Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe who was the king of the capital Kandy ), became a crown colony in 1802, and was united under British rule by 1815. As Ceylon, it became independent on 4th February 1948; its name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972. Most of the Sri Lankan people are Sinhala Buddhist. Sri Lanka is an agricultural country. The buddhist people have very good hospitality. They have a strong relationship among family members than people in western countries. They are very respectful to their parents, adults, teachers, priests. Old parents are looked after by their children. A buddhist never forget to go to the buddhist temple frequently. They start daily routines after worshipping the tripple gems ( the Lord Buddha, Dhamma, Priests ). Their important activities and insidences of life are associated with buddhist culture.
